One of the main focuses in our school currently is to improve discussion skills among students and help the learning to become more student focused and less teacher directed. It is difficult to have a flowing group conversation with everyone sitting around the room at their tables. This makes the teacher the center of the talk. Sitting together is a much more intimate way to have a discussion. However, we don't have a rug, and the floor is cold and dirty. Who would want to sit there?!? Adding a rug to my classroom will allow us to sit together and have more effective discussions as well as create a stronger sense of community and a warmer feeling in the classroom. Another focus, as in all schools, is to grow strong readers. The only way to become a strong reader is to read, a lot! But who wants to sit and read in an uncomfortable, cold metal chair? My students need a comfortable place to sit during the independent reading portion of our center rotation. A rug in the classroom library can be just that place!
