My 6th grade students are smart, passionate, young people that are experiencing great change as they transition from elementary to middle school. They experience dramatic changes as their minds and bodies grow. Billy's story in "Where the Red Fern Grows" and the changes he faces mirrors the challenges my students encounter as they develop into young adults. My students can relate to Billy and the novel which increases their interest in literature and encourages improved literacy performance.
