I teach Art to kindergarten though fifth grade students at an elementary an inner city Title I school in Savannah, Georgia. As school with over 90 percent of our students receiving free or reduced priced lunches. Our school includes the demographic of a largely African descended inner city community. In Art children are taught to expose students to visual and historic references enabling them to make connections to other academic subjects, thus, students make connections to history, science, reading, phonics and math. Fine motor skills, visual connections, and classroom responsibilities are encouraged and strengthened through educating with the Visual Arts. Truly, my students should be offered as many opportunities to learn as available. Seeing artwork on display and having their own work on display is a very positive and rewarding experience for each child.
