With the suicide rate among younger children increasing, social-emotional learning is now more important than ever. As a counselor, I am always searching for ways to best reach my young students and get them to talk about their feelings. They are elementary students, so many of them also struggle with expressing their needs and feelings. The items that I am requesting will be used to assist with making students feel comfortable as they talk during one-on-one or small group counseling sessions. Studies have shown that small children are more likely to talk when actively engaged in an activity. The Oculus and Spheros will provide the students with experiences beyond the walls of the school. They will also be used to help calm anxious or upset students. The technology will be used by the counseling/exceptional education departments to provide students with experiences that are meaningful, engaging, and authentic. The teachers/counselors will be able to use the technology to assist with bringing information to life for students that have diverse or exceptional needs. As well as immerse them in a world that will allow them to relax enough to discuss their feelings.
