My students embody a variety of cultures including Native American, Marshallese, Latino, European, Asian, and African American. Despite their cultural differences, 85% of them also live in poverty; many of whom are first and second generation immigrants. The academic demands of the 2014 classroom for all my students are greater than they have ever been. More than 50% are struggling in literacy, and need greater opportunities to encounter good writing. Very few of them are read to at home, and even fewer own quality books to read independently. Traditional read-alouds are beneficial to my students, but what they really need is to be able to hold the text in their hands for a shared reading experience.
