We are a Title One school with almost 90% of the students on free lunch. Many of the students do not have books of their own to read over the summer and their parents do not have transportation to take them to the library. This is very detrimental for our students who already struggle academically. Research shows that reading scores normally drop over the summer but for our students who already read a grade level or two behind they cannot afford to play catch up every fall. By providing a free book fair each May we can ensure that every student has 3-5 books to take home and keep reading over the summer! Although our students don't have much at home the still have big hearts. When they return in the fall I always ask them to "pay it forward" and bring the books in they are finished reading so they can go to students around the world who do not have books at home or even at their school. We have donated books to schools in Africa, Vietnam, India, and Papua New Guinea.
