I see a scholar and a revolutionary in every single one of my students. My challenge is to help them see themselves as such. Many of my students face personal and structural barriers that come with living in a low-income neighborhood and attending a high-poverty school; unjustly mired by factors beyond their control, many fight against incredible odds. But what most people do not realize is that far more than they challenge me, my students inspire me. Some of my male students, who often write about being confronted with street violence, often get so lost in their books they can't tear their eyes off the pages. Among my students are future Nobel-prize winning authors who literally move me to tears with the lyrical beauty of their prose. I teach future lawyers, doctors, teachers, and FBI agents. I teach dreamers and fighters. And every single day, I am deeply humbled and grateful that I am their teacher and they are mine.
