My students are between 5 and 8 years old and they have moderate to severe cognitive disabilities paired with/or a result of additional disabilities such as Downes Syndrome and autism. The classroom is part of self contained special education program within our elementary school. The program is designed to provide access to the state curriculum with an adapted, hands-on, real world approach to learning. Students' cognitive levels and abilities vary widely, so it is important to design lessons that reach all learners, using the learning modalities that they learn from best. My students learn best when they don't even realize they are learning. That is why this project is so important to me as a teacher. I will not only be teaching science but also math (measurement), reading (following directions, sequencing), as well as a number of core concepts such as color identification, 5 senses, opposites etc. and these don't include what stu.s will learn as they play with the compound.
