I am lucky enough to teach, spend 3 years with, an amazing bunch of Lower Elementary Montessori students. These 19, six to nine year-olds, have a wide range of abilities and interests. In a Montessori classroom children are encouraged to be independent thinkers. Children in a Montessori classroom select the lessons that catch their interest and work at their own pace. My students enjoy researching and learning about so many things including zoology, astronomy, botany, and geography. They may do this independently or collaboratively. It is the teacher's responsibility to provide the students with the materials they need. In order to maximize the materials available 3 classrooms share everything. It is also a great way to teach the children grace and courtesy. But it means that 60 children share what is available. Approximately 70% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of the children come from single parent homes and many are considered homeless.
