My school is a 2nd through 11th grade Public Charter School located in South Phoenix. We have two campuses, one for the high school and one for grades two through eight, that are located within blocks of each other. At the middle school, we serve 99% of students on free lunch and work with a demographic upwards of 90% Latino students. Both 4th grade classes that I teach have 24 students, full of tremendous energy and potential. My students are driven to make a life for themselves, and we have excellent parental support that conveys this same message. My students need to be able to dream, but in order for that to happen, they must be exposed to things beyond their community. I constantly spend time showing them pictures, videos and literature from different cultures, societies and populations, striving to expose them to the opportunities that they have as they grow older. Change starts with being informed!
