First graders are unique individuals with a lot of energy. Their busy bodies need to move often. When students are seated in chairs for a duration long enough to finish a math or reading assignment they can become restless, distracted, and distracting to others. Some will slump over their desks, rounding their shoulders in. Others who have more energy will be compelled to be up and down out of their seat, losing focus on learning and distracting those around them. Wobble stools, balance cushions, yoga balls, and bolster pillows are just the alternative to basic chairs that will benefit first grade bodies and minds. By having a variety of options for seating, my students can choose what works best for them. Some of the options provide a small amount of movement that can calm energetic bodies. Some of these types of seating have also been helpful in supporting a healthy posture. Focusing on learning with the wiggles is a challenge. Students need good seating options to help put their best effort into their schooling.
