Everyone reads differently, whether it is what or how you read. I love reading and reading graphic novels is one of my favorite things to do. I share that with my students through my classroom library. I have a passion for getting graphic novels into the hands of children to read. Many of my students don't have the means to buy their own books. Both our public library and school library have great selections of books for our students, but they don't have a good selection of graphic novels for them to read. My classroom library is small, but growing. I try to pick up a new book or two when I can. At the end of last school year, I began to check out books for my classroom library to students who wanted to read them. As word got out, more students wanted to look and read my books. As you can imagine, I was both happy and disappointed. I felt I didn't have enough books to offer the students a very good selection. It is my mission to grow my library to include many more graphic novels and high interest reading opportunities. Graphic novels can be a stepping stone to novel reading. Some popular novels and movies had graphic novel versions. I have found students will sometimes read the graphic novel and then go on to read the regular novel. Students with disabilities find graphic novels make more sense when reading about difficult topics. The use of illustrations and color choice is engaging to readers. My school uses Accelerated Reader (AR) to track the reading of our students. The majority of graphic novels I have are AR books. Please help spread the love of reading through graphic novels.
