My school has a high percentage of Hispanic students, but we have other languages and ethnicities as well. About half the students are English language learners and music is a wonderful way to learn and practice English while also learning songs and music basics. My English only students also learn new vocabulary through music and singing. We learn to read music notation, rhythm, melody, form, and expressive elements. The students perform in three different musical shows during the year. I also teach a chorus of 4th and 5th grade selected students. They learn singing in harmony while experiencing various styles of music and singing in other languages.
