I have a great diversity of students in my class. About 60 percent of my students are on free or reduced lunch due to their socioeconomic backgrounds. Currently, I have three students who are repeating this grade level due to their difficulty in understanding necessary concepts and skills. I also have a few ESE and ESOL students in my class. This group of students shows a wide variety of strengths and weaknesses. However, one thing that is common among all of them is their love for science and hands-on experiments. They love to hear about atoms and molecules, and they love to observe items under the microscope or through a magnifying glass. The thrill of using a Petrie dish and collecting pollen using forceps can be clearly seen on their faces. When they are able to make sense of different processes around them, they are able to make logical conclusions and learn a great deal of concepts and skills. My school gives me several opportunities to plan these activities and implement them.
