My severely handicapped students come from struggling homes in the inner city. Family life is hard because of illness, poverty, or disabilities. 98% of the students in our school receive free lunch. The school environment is very important to students. Our classroom is rich in love, kindness, and print materials. My assessments revealed gaps in students' knowledge; they do not know letters. I want to build a foundation upon which students will develop a love of reading. Implementing a multisensory approach to teaching letters, letter sounds and sight words helped my students begin to identify the letter of the week. My students need many opportunities to practice their new learning in order to master it. The Alphabet Sounds Puzzles will be the perfect addition to my students' learning. The puzzles will introduce words that begin with the letter of the week as well as give them multisensory input when learning new concepts. Letter puzzles will enhance their learning as they learn by doing.
