With many students in the class, at times it is difficult to know if all the students understand what is happening. If each student has a personal white board and markers/eraser at their desks, students can share their thoughts by holding up the answers or just sharing the answers by passing the white boards to other students. Now I have students use scrap paper to hold up answers. This method is time consuming and not very efficient. White boards for each student would allow me to quickly see if the class "gets it" and not waste time with scrap paper. Students writing on large classroom white boards is an interactive way for the students to show their thinking and for the teacher to see their thought process. The school here is over 80 years old. Some of the boards are painted with dry erase paint to make them "white boards". The board in my class is broken and has sticky tape on it. It would be uplifting to the students and me to have two new white boards in the classroom and three smaller ones to put around the class. The larger and smaller white boards are used to share student work, to have competitions and to create a space where students can work in pairs to get their work done. At the moment, there is not enough space for all my students to work together on the white boards. Working on the white boards is a teaching method which allows students to get out of their seats and be interactive with the objective of the lesson.
