Recent research is showing overwhelmingly positive academic and social/emotional outcomes for students in flexible seating classrooms. Our students feel empowered when they have choice and control over their learning environment, and flexible seating encourages students to identify spaces where they stay calm, focused, and productive. Alternative seating allows students to move, which benefits our diverse population of creative, artistic, high-energy pre-teens, some gifted, some with learning challenges, children with ADHD or ASD, and all those learners in between! Flexible seating allows our class to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand, and this keeps their minds more alert, and their bodies healthier. It makes it easy to collaborate with peers with tables and standing desks on wheels, and spaces around the room inviting to small groups of sixth graders. We have the community of learners, and an administration supportive of flexible seating for our creative kids--we just don't have the financial resources. With your donations, our class will receive (2) rectangular activity tables on wheels for group work that can take place anywhere in the classroom, (4) sit/stand mobile desks to offer a place for those who prefer to stand or lean during lessons, (4) Classic Video Rockers to add more options for the students who need those short bouts of movement to exhibit more on-task behavior, and (2) 4 ft. rugs for sitting in pairs or trios. All of these items offer instant, open collaboration opportunities, which coincide with the teaching philosophies that best meet the needs of our unique population.
