Based on current research on healthy child development, there is a growing understanding of the central role that brain integration plays in a child’s interaction with the outside world. By embracing the concepts of this whole-brain perspective, there are several ways to nurture stronger, more resilient children in school as well as at home. By providing children in the school setting opportunities to self-regulate based on their physical and emotional needs, educators can promote what researchers refer to as an integrated, whole brain. Many of the behavioral challenges faced by parents and educators are a result of chaos and rigidity in the child’s brain due to lack of integration. The following sensory materials requested: Body Pod Sensory Sock, Sensy Ball, Bilibo Chair, Weighted Dolphin Wrap, and the Playful Tunnel will provide for activities that address sensory integration needs in the counseling setting. With this focus in mind, the counselor can create a safe and empowering environment for children by connecting with them during interaction while allowing for movement and sensory experiences. As part of this whole-brain approach, a mindfulness-based curriculum is followed. The counselor will introduce activities for mindfulness that allow children to explore self-awareness and focused attention. To facilitate these activities, Yoga Meditation Pillows help children to calm their bodies and experience the benefits of stillness. The Mindful Games Activity Cards offer a variety of age-appropriate ideas for introducing the basic concepts of mindfulness practice. During the process of expressing feelings and experiences, Sandtray Therapeutic Play, utilizing specifically designed tools such as those requested, can open up avenues of communication for the child. By addressing a child's need for brain integration, the activities proposed can lead to improved emotional regulation, enhanced social interaction, improved academic performance, and ultimately increased self-esteem.
