My students walk into the classroom for breakfast each morning. They are generally happy and excited to be at school--a place where they believe they can "Grow Their Brains" by learning--a process that will transform them into "big kids." As conversations begin at the breakfast tables, I often hear my students talk about what they watched on TV or played on their tablets the night before. I like to listen, to better understand their interests, but I also like to provoke them with a question of my own in response, "Did you read a book last night?" Some of them say "yes!" and love to tell me about who read to them and what they discovered. But more often than not, students tell me the TV puts them to sleep. I teach in a Head Start classroom in an urban school district. Nearly 100% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and the same statistic is true throughout my school that serves pre k-8th grade. My students are lively, fast learners. They are curious and capable.
