My first graders are an energetic bunch of six- and seven-year-olds who are thirsty for knowledge. We sit in our chairs for a large portion of our day. To be able to give them another option for seating would provide them with the ability to build their core strength and give them some "wiggle" time. The sensory needs of a six- and seven-year-old are still not quite ready for chair sitting. By providing stability balls for seating in our classroom we can give kids who just need to move an opportunity to get more comfortable. According to Livestrong.com "A study published in the October 2003 issue of the '"American Journal of Occupational Therapy" found that students with attention challenges... tended to focus better when using stability balls instead of chairs. The study revealed students behaved better and language skills improved, and that students and teachers preferred the use of stability balls in the classroom instead." Think of the possibilities!
