Since September, my students have watched me engrossed in this one book during our school-wide silent reading time. The cover doesn't look interesting. The binding is four times thicker than anything they'd ever consider. It definitely doesn't have pictures and they're certain that it has nothing to do with zombies, fights to the death, or sparkly vampires. Now, to be candid, these are not students who list enjoying literature very high on their list of priorities. Considering some of their backgrounds, who can blame them? However, for the last three months or so, I have involuntarily laughed out loud countless times and have maybe teared up a time or two. My actions were not intentional, but the results are clear. These kids are intrigued. Earlier this week, when I read the first two paragraphs of the novel for an activity on inferences and context clues, I looked around at my kids as I often do. Their eyes weren't glazed over...they were hanging on my every word. I got 'em!
