I work in a very low (Title 1) school and I teach Kindergarten. My students are my pride and joy. I have 18 wonderful students this year! They are loving, caring, and extremely hard workers. Unfortunately, many of them come from rough situations. It could be that they live with grandparents, or both of their parents work and their siblings help them with their homework, or they struggle with academic tasks. There are many studies that show that children from low socio-economic areas come to school with less than half of the needed vocabulary to succeed. It is believed that by the age of 3, children from low areas have heard 30 million words less than students in higher areas. Without a large vocabulary, students struggle to learn how to read.
