My students are primarily pre-advanced placement and advanced placement Chemistry students in grades 10-12 and they love to do labs of all kinds. Our district is in a small city that has been rocked by drought. Water conservation is an absolute. As a science teacher, I have been diligent to make sure that I have adjusted my planning to micro-scale lab and minimum usage labs, but I feel I can do more for water conservation. As the advanced chemistry teacher, I have the curricular responsibility to teach the kids all aspects of reactions in aqueous solution. As you can imagine that is difficult to accomplish a hands on lab when you are worried about wasting vital resources. Much of my lab equipment is original to my 50 year old building and not particularly energy or resource efficient. For example, our old water still has been repaired numerous times and it takes around 8 hours to produce a liter of distilled water. In the stewardship, I had to cut some labs.
