My students are a wonderful group of children who unfortunately do not have many educational experiences until they walk into my classroom. Many have never been to school before, have never held a book or a pencil before, and have no idea what school is. 50% of my students are ESL students who may know some English or none at all. I have to use a variety of hand motions, pointing, demonstrating, and other methods on a daily basis to fill in the language gaps. They come to me with scared little faces wondering what has just happened in their life. They find that they love to come to school, their safe place, where they have routines and consistency in their lives. As a teacher, it is my job to get my students ready for first grade regardless of their background. I try to do this with as many hands-on activities as possible, exposing them to new ways of learning every day.
