My students are first graders learning English as a new language in a high poverty area in Indianapolis. Most of them come to first grade lacking not only basic conversational English, but the background knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension skills necessary to make connections when reading. I work with these students in small groups, where I can read with them, give them the time they need to ask questions, understand, and build background knowledge in both English and their native language. These students are bright, curious children capable of making gains in both English and reading. To do this, I would like to introduce them to reading in English through a variety of studies of children's authors. I hope these award-winning authors become favorites of theirs too!
