I teach at an alternative school where students have had obstacles to overcome. Some students are the providers for their family and work nights and come to school during the day, others already have families of their own, some have been expelled from regular high school or lost credit due to absences and this is their second chance. Any way you slice it, these kids have some baggage and often need some extra encouragement. Many students only get meals and positive interactions while they are at school which is another reason a unit plan over this wonderful book is so important to me. These students are not all college bound, but they are all at school and learning. I want to let them see the possibilities are endless if you work hard and believe in yourself.
