My students are taught all of their reading skills in small guided reading groups. These groups are comprised of 4-6 students each. While I am working with a group, the remaining students go to stations. One of my stations is the technology station. Because I only have three student computers and 5-6 students need to be at this station, the other choice is for them to use handheld learning games. We are currently using the Leapfrog Leapster2 systems and compatible games. Three of these were generously purchased for my classroom in 2009 but they need to be replaced because they are in bad shape. The games are old and though educational, do not meet the learning objectives of today. The volume no longer works on one of the game systems. The very small screens are badly scratched on all of them and they rarely last a day without needing to be charged. My students know that when one goes down, they can try a different one or share with a friend but sometimes none of them will work properly and this leads to loss of precious instructional time. Because we are a low-income, high-poverty school, many of my students have never used electronic tablets before. By donating to my project, you will be opening doors that may not have otherwise been possible for them. With these new tablets, my students will be able to focus on the learning objectives presented and will not have to worry if the systems will work or not. The games I requested are better matched to today's math, reading and science standards.
