The students in my classroom come from all over our city; from various backgrounds and family situations. This class has established a strong sense of community. They are very supportive of one another and will cheer each other on and celebrate their accomplishments. They are truly like a family. After a lesson in civil rights, one of my students chose to do a speech on Dr. Martin Luther King. He said that he chose him as his hero because "without Dr. King, I would not have as many friends in my classroom." This little six year old's comments touched my heart. It's one of those moments I know I'll never forget.
