My special education students often come to me feeling defeated, hopeless, and fearful to take risks in their learning. School is very hard for them. They have all experienced a significant amount of school failure which negatively affects their motivation, confidence and self-esteem. They often quit and give up at the first sign of academic struggle. They don’t understand that with practice, perseverance and a growth mindset, they can grow their brain and turn their situation around in ways they never imagined. By donating to our book project, you will give hope to the hopeless, and help break their notions that they are alone in their struggles, less intelligent or less capable as their peers and that there is nothing that can be done to change their situation. They will relate to characters in these books who persevere and overcome their struggles, as in the books "Stuck", and "What Do You Do with A Problem?", "I Will Try!", "I Can’t Do That, YET" and "I Can Do Hard Thing". In the books, "Bubble Gum Brain", "Your Fantastic, Elastic Brain", "Hello Brain?" and "Mindset Matters" they will learn that their brain can change and how to make that happen. In addition, they will learn to reduce their stress so that learning can occur with books such as, "131 Stress Busters" and "Mood Boosters for Kids".
