Eighty-five percent of my students are Hispanic and come from economically disadvantaged households. In addition, our school has a significant number of refugee students from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Iraq. Most of these students don't have age-appropriate books at home and don't have caregivers that take them to the public library. For many of my students, their sole source of reading material is the school library. My students love the library and are hungry for books. They are eager to read about new places, people, and ideas.
