Imagine sitting for 6 hours or more every day. Imagine having so much energy that you feel like you may burst like a volcano. Do you remember what life was like when you were 5 and 6 years old? I sure do. I was constantly outside, moving! Today's kindergarten students are asked to sit still for way to many hours. They arrive for breakfast in the early morning around 7:15 and start sitting from that moment. They get playground twice a week for 20 minutes and PE 3 times a week for 45 minutes. I offer a few other movement opportunities in my room through hands on activities and brain breaks but that's it! If my project is funded, I plan to offer flexible seating options to students who need to move throughout the school day while continuing to learn. My hope is that movement will assist my students who exhibit negative behaviors and turn them into positive outcomes. I have 1 Wobble Chair currently and it is used daily but I have more students that really need the opportunity to move while learning. In addition to the Wobble Chairs, I think the mini trampoline will allow every student a chance to bounce some energy out simply by moving.
