Through my years of teaching, I have noticed an increase in the level of students' stress and their struggle to cope with this stress. The stress affects their ability to focus and learn in the classroom. It also affects their ability to appropriately relate to their peers and teachers. Learning strategies to handle the pressures of being a child in the 21st century is vital to a child's health and well being. There are many benefits to introducing children to the practice of yoga. The physical benefits of yoga include increased flexibility and improved body image and self esteem. Yoga also creates a sense of calmness and relaxation. The strategies taught through yoga will help children deal with the bustling pace of their small world. Bringing mindfulness into my classroom is a personal goal as I continue my teaching practice. Yoga mats will define a space for my children to relax, focus, and gain a sense of well being.
