Although the students in my class are eager to learn, many of them live in crowded multi-family homes where they are lucky to get a good nights sleep and a nutritious meal. Breakfast and lunch are provided to 80% of our schools population. The majority of my class have not attended preschool and do not come to school with a wide range of experiences. Many of the students have not been exposed to blocks, counters, and other manipulatives that help build a strong foundation in math. With California's new Common Core standards my students are enjoying math through exploration and "hands-on" techniques that make learning fun.
