The students in my Japanese class are full of positive energy, are driven to learn and to succeed, and are deeply invested in learning the language. Many of my students have never been out of the country, or even out of the state; Japanese is a window to a world they know very little about. Many of my students see Japanese as a first step in the direction of success outside of their small town. The students in my fencing classes are interested in fencing as a sport and as an art. I have had students leave my class and continue fencing into college. I love seeing timid students who were searching for a team to join , suddenly become confident in this ancient sport. Fencing is a way of thinking. It helps students think about their own actions and the reactions of others, it asks students to plan ahead, and execute those plans. Fencing provides valuable life skills to all students, regardless of physical ability.
