My students are amazing and diverse, coming from many different cultures and life experiences. This is what makes my job so interesting--the opportunity to teach such a wide range of young people and also watch them learn from each other. Many of my students are driven to succeed and take their education as far as possible. Some will be the first to graduate from high school in their entire families, which can be a big motivator. The school that I work in is a Title I school within a generally blue-collar community. Through my years teaching, the district demographic has shifted with the economy. Where four years ago many student's parents worked at Ford Motor Company on the line or in a skilled trade, now many student's families are struggling to make ends meet and avoid foreclosure. This dynamic can often make learning difficult for some students, and the job of teaching more challenging. Despite this, the overall school community is close-knit and supportive.
