Many of my students do not have the opportunity to travel or explore the world outside of their immediate community. Experiential learning is such an important way to educate children about society - it can challenge their ideas, encourage critical thinking, and promote meaningful dialogue within the classroom. But without the ability to show children first-hand what is happening in society, they often lack the understanding of how the past and present will affect their future. It is so important to be able to help them connect to the world in ways beyond what their current environment provides. Scholastic News and Time for Kids magazines give my students the chance to expand their horizons beyond their community and gain deeper understanding of events that will shape their future. Using interactive print and digital media designed for young learners is a great way to educate students about current events and the world around them. Not only do these magazines offer print copies of age-appropriate articles, they also include interactive lessons and videos through apps that allow the students to gain a deeper understanding while improving their technology skills. Finally, there are online worksheets, quizzes, and games about each article, which allows for the teacher to gauge the level of comprehension and understanding.
