My students love art. We completed a graph at the beginning of the year, which asked them; what subject is your favorite? Art won by a landslide. Although our school doesn't have an art program my students are still drawn to the creativity, freedom and color of visual art. My student also love science and being outside. Last week we collected leaves in science to compare the different shapes and textures. I have never seen a class so excited about leaves, and most of them came from the school landscaping. When my class collected the leaves in science I wished more than anything to have a book for each student, so they could press and then put the leaves into it. I would then have had them write about the experience of collecting the leaves. I would also have them label their leaves and draw pictures of the bushes and trees they removed them from. This mini lesson could be a spread in their own student created textbook.
