My students have mild and moderate intellectual disabilities and emotional disorders. I emphasize the importance of knowledge to my students while integrating social skills in our everyday lessons. I maximize the use of our resources from grade level text to pizza boxes. My students also focus on life skills such as job training, cooking, and hygiene. Our school consists of mostly students living in low socio-economic communities. Some of my students have experienced trauma in their lives so we strive to make our classroom a safe and comforting learning environment. I'm always learning from my students as I implement new lessons. I have come to understand that more resources (especially electronic resources) do show an increase in students participation.
