There are some excellent reasons to bring archery in the school setting. The skills in archery can be mainstreamed and maintained into academics. Archery is an excellent sport, available in indoor and outdoor settings, and it appeals to many audiences, come rain, snow or sunshine. There are many different styles of archery, including target archery (as seen at the Olympic and Paralympic Games) and 3D archery, for shooting foam animal targets. Archery is a skill that is also a lifelong hobby and is adaptable for those with disabilities, known as para-archers. Research shows that students who are involved in extracurricular activities are 87% more likely to enjoy school, make good grades, maintain focus and good behavior, and graduate from high school. Archers learn to tune out all distractions, focus on their form, and release the bowstring consistently. Concentrating during archery practice can help you focus better in other areas of life too. Competing in tournaments is also good practice for coping with high-pressure situations. Strengthen your arms, core, hands, chest and shoulders by practicing a proper draw. Trying to draw a bow with too much draw weight can cause injury, so begin by having a professional set your bow to the correct draw weight. As you build strength and skill, increase your draw weight. Whether your “target” is improving your health, physique, sociability or focus, archery can help you hit the bull’s-eye and be a more confident you, in and out of the classroom. Our particular middle school lacks the funds and supplies to build up an archery program. Our coach is a math teacher and is a volunteer archery coach. He spends many hours before and after school during the week and on weekends to prepare for archers.
