Our school is a STEM school where all subject areas are taught through the lens of science, technology, engineering and math. The sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in my reading intervention classes are young adolescents who struggle with literacy and are reading one to three years behind their grade level. Reading is the last thing they would choose to do in their free time. However, they all have had a positive experience with a book at some point in their life and want desperately to do well in school. My job is to help them understand and experience that becoming proficient, strategic readers will help them in their STEM classes, and will help them improve their grades and their lives in the future. My students come from diverse backgrounds and one third qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. Their diversity includes Hispanic, Native American, Russian, Pacific Islander, African American, as well as Caucasian students.
