The school is located in a low socioeconomic area and was build in the 1960's. Recently, a new playground was added to help support our growing population of special needs students. My classroom serves students with special needs ranging from 1st to 4th grade. The school is rich in culture and diversity and the students in my class represent 9 different countries. Their own diverse needs represent a variety of diagnosis including autism, Down's syndrome, attention hyperactivity disorder, developmental delays and many physical challenges. My goal is to provide the best possible learning environment for each student. Students thrive and make steady progress as they feel safe. Sensory items for calming, visual barriers for reducing distractions, and light filters for reducing anxiety have been incorporated in the class as well as engaging learning activities that integrate student preferences for positive motivation.
