My class is made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Gifted and Talented (GT) students. GT class is all about world history, research, and creative problem solving. Activities and simulations help my students live world history and encourages them to connect their in-class experiences to their lives. Instruction is designed to include critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Middle school subjects taught in isolation cause many students to compartmentalize their learning and not make critical historical connections. Students do not tie technological advancements to subsequent events and developments in world civilizations and societies. Because students experience social studies and STEM subjects in isolation, their ability to successfully use creative problem solving remains underdeveloped. They lack experiences using their academic knowledge and skill to solve meaningful relevant complex real life problems.
