Having been a teacher for 30 years, I know that research shows that if children develop a love of reading, they will be more likely to complete school, go to college, and be successful adults. Good reading skills are necessary for their development and success in all other content areas. The development of effective reading skills begins with a love of reading. I have found that when I set up an inviting library with bright colors and comfortable furniture, it is a place where students want to be. There they begin to explore the various genres of books available and start to recognize what types of books they love, which authors they find interesting, and what books they want to read next. In my new classroom, I have many books, but no way to display them. I have a rug I bought to set aside a library area, but no furniture for students to sit and read. I truly believe that the library is the heart of the classroom and so I'm striving to make my library just that with your help.
