My students are inner city youth who live in a highly impoverished community. It is an area that has one of the largest rates of incarceration in the city. There is little environmental support for education outside of the classroom. They attend a school that is not diverse; however, the students themselves have varied needs and interests. Many of them have low self-esteem due to the title of being students with special needs, as well as recognition of their academic and/or emotional deficits. These deficits cause a lack of motivation and result in students not putting forth effort and ease of frustration. The students typically feel inadequate; therefore, they need varied activities geared toward multiple intelligence. This will help to establish interest, develop independence, and enhance self-esteem, while also instructing in an up-to-date manner.
