In the today's society, my students need functional skills as well as academic skills. They need to learn how to survive in the world, and it begins with teaching them to be independent to the best of their ability. They need to learn how to cook for themselves and safely use the stove, oven, utensils, and microwave. They need to learn to wash clothes and iron them. These are skills that they will be able to carry with them outside the classroom. These skills can be integrated with science, math, and reading. We are in need of new kitchen equipment in our classroom. This will help students learn how to safety prepare meals, learn about the hidden dangers of handling food and learn to be independent in the kitchen.
