There are 20 students in my room. 83% of our students receive free and/or reduced lunches. We are a low poverty school in an area of high unemployment. There is a significant ELL population here as well. My co-teachers put in many hours of unpaid time to meet academic needs of our students. We are a dedicated staff. Parents of our children want the best for their children, but have many stresses with jobs or college as well as maintaining a healthy environment for their families. My students are happy, busy and eager to learn. They want my attention all day long! Having someone who will listen and respect them seems to be very important to them. As Kindergarteners this is their first experience in a public school. At this point we have only been in school for 12 days. They are learning to share, take turns and cooperate for the good of the whole group. There are so many rules and routines to learn as well as the curriculum! Most are very tired by the end of the day.
