Our elementary school is home to a wonderfully diverse population of students, many of whom come from military families. Most of the children I teach have come from all over the country and will move many more times, changing communities, schools and friends. In addition, they frequently deal with the absence of a parent due to deployment. Despite these challenges my first graders are eager and enthusiastic learners. At ages 5,6 and 7 they are full of energy when they arrive at school each morning! My students thrive on consistent routines and expectations so that they can put that energy to good use acquiring new knowledge.
