I teach first and second grade students with special needs. My students include children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Dyslexia, and other learning disabilities. Each student has unique needs as the severity of needs range the full spectrum. Some students have very severe disabilities and challenges, while others are less severe. For example, some of the students are stronger academically, but struggle with age appropriate social interaction, while others are normal socially but may struggle academically. Other students however, have disabilities that cause difficulty with both. My school is very supportive of progressive and creative teaching techniques. An "Individualized Education Plan" has been developed for each student. Depending upon the unique needs of each student, different teaching techniques are utilized. The variety of techniques I use are based on a review of existing data and consistent with proven methods of teaching students with these specific disabilities.
