My classes are comprised of mostly freshman, but I have a small number of sophomores as well. The high school I teach at is the largest in the state of Oregon (~3,100 students), and our district has the highest poverty rate in the Portland-Metro area. Eighty-five percent of our students are enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program, and there are over 80 languages spoken throughout the district. Because our school is so large and diverse, it is very easy for students to get lost in the crowd. Many of my students go from class to class without any real connection to their teachers, peers, or what they are learning. Because of our high poverty rate, many of my students have been forced to step in the role of a parent for their younger siblings, or have had to get a job to help their family financially. Most of my students have never had the opportunity to just be a kid. My goal is to give them this opportunity, all while teaching them to take ownership of their education.
