When I tell people where I teach, the stereotypes about my students overwhelm me. I teach my students about finding their "zen", or calm in what can be very chaotic lives. At recess, the first day teaching this concept, one of my brilliant, sweet, and clever girls went outside, sat alone on the grass, and found her peace. Our school's population is almost 100% English Language Learning, free or reduced lunch, and minority students. My students, like all students, are more than the stereotypes or low expectations placed on them. They are hilarious and capable of so much.
